Must-Have Travel apps to take on holiday this summer

The holiday season has already started and you’re probably thinking about the hot sun and beach. It’s wise to get your phone ready too, there are many helpful FREE apps available which might help you out on your holiday adventures. So without further ado, here are 7 Must-Have apps to take with you on holiday this summer…

1. PolarSteps

Available on: Android, IOS, Web

Polarsteps is a travel journal app that helps you track and organise your travels. It builds up a map which you can add photos to and share with your friends and family. I used the app on my North Italy Road Trip last year and I really liked it, unfortunately, I only discovered it towards the end of the trip but I will definitely use it again! The App is easy to use and only takes a couple of minutes to set up. You can manually add your waypoints or you can set it to track your travel. You can even order a beautiful photo book from your trip!.

2. Google Maps

Available on: Android, IOS, Web

This list would be nothing without mentioning Google maps! Apart from the obvious map and navigation, the app has many other useful features such as photos, facts, hotel information and reviews which will help you in finding places to visit, eat and sleep. It also features a journey planner which if you are using public transport to move around will help you find the best route to your destination.

3. Google Lens

Available on: Android

Google Lens is an excellent app which uses your camera to find information about a product or place. Pictured above, I used Google Lens to find out information about the Wawel Castle in Kraków, Poland. The app has many other useful features such as the ability to scan and translate text, see what’s popular on menus and many more. Unfortunately, the app is currently only available on Android but the Google app is available on IOS and it also lets you search what you see!

4. Trip Advisor

Available on: Android, IOS, Web

Trip Advisor helps you find hotels, things to do, places to eat, flights and more. You can even follow your friends and travel experts and get personalised advice!

5. Uber

Available on: Android, IOS

Where available, Uber is a great app to use to get around and in many cases, it can save you a lot of money too, from my experience anyway.

6. Google Translate

Available on: Android, IOS, Web

Google Translate is a very useful app! I find that using Google translate and attempting to actually say what has been translated to the locals shows more respect, sure in some cases, it can make the locals laugh. The only trouble that I find, especially as a bilingual person is that it’s not always 100% accurate.

7. Your airline’s app

Ok so this is more of a generic app, but it’s always good to have your airlines app on your phone. Many modern airlines offer mobile boarding passes which not only helps the environment by saving trees, it also is very convenient. The apps will usually hold your flight information too. I have two favourite apps including the Wizz Air app which gives you a useful travel itinerary in the form of a timeline, check-in and your boarding card. I also like the easy Jet app which is packed full of cool features like Check-in, boarding pass and it keeps you updated about your journey.
